The latest excavations of soul jazz in the seemingly inexhaustible Studio One archives are dedicated is once again dedicated to the thematic focus Rocksteady. Accompanied by the liner notes of Steve Barrow, author of the book “Rough Guide To Reggae”, presents the compilation a total of 19 soul-infected, offbeat songs produced by Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd, most of which were written in the late sixties was created. Genealogically seen between Ska and Early Reggae or Roots Reggae. With from the Part are “harmony groups” like the Gaylads, John Holt & The Paragons or Carlton & The Shoes, whose Fascination for US-American role models such as Curtis Mayfield and other famous soul interpreters is unmistakable. Anyway, the influence of soul on reggae is obvious, but nowhere is it so pronounced like Rocksteady. The era of Rocksteady was especially marked by vocal wonders like Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson and Owen Gray make their mark. They’re in addition to greats like The Heptones (with whom Bob Dylan- Cover “I Shall Be Released”), The Actions and Cannon & The Soul Vendors also on “Rocksteady 2 represented.
