Soul Jazz takes us once again to the “crescent moon city” New Orleans. The fourth edition of “New Orleans Funk” is dedicated to funk and soul pieces infected by the voodoo virus. A virus that was known to ravage the Mississippi Delta, and which, like nowhere else, gave this special syncopated New Orleans funk its very own unmistakable taste

As one could already hear on other Soul Jazz releases, the New Orleans funk typical of the city fed itself from Rhythm & Blues, Louisiana Cajun, Caribbean Rumba and Mambo rhythms on the one hand and from the sounds of the Mardi Gras, Marching-, Funeral- and Jazz bands on the other hand

“New Orleans Funk 4” traces only this gumbo sound with voodoo flavor, from James Waynes’ anthem “Junco Partner” (1951), which became a classic with cover versions of Dr John, Professor Longhair, James Booker and The Clash, to the mid-seventies rare groove heavyweight “Action Speak Louder Than Words” by Chocolate Milk

As is typical for soul jazz, the compilation is packed with well-known artists, including Eddie Bo, Betty Harris, Dave Bartholomew, Johnny Adams and Eldridge Holmes, as well as less well-known second-row artists such as Gus “The Groove” Lewis, James K-Nine, Norma Jean, Bob French, Chuck Colbert, Zilla Mayes and Joe Haywood.
